Did you get nothing when you tried the starter again or would it
click once and refuse to crank the engine each time the switch
was activated?

You may or may not have fixed the problem.  Possible causes

1) Poor terminal connections: Single or multiple clicks.

2) Starter solonoid going bad: Single or multiple clicks.

3) Battery voltage low, or battery going bad: Usually several
clicks

4) Starter gear and/or ring gear: Starter quite often 'jams' with
this condition.

You may have cured it.  If the solonoid was loose and it went to
drive in the starter pinion, the pinion could have jamed before
it was fully home in the ring gear.  If the pinion doesn't go
fully home the jumper switch inside which turns on the current to
the starter doesn't activate.  This gives a single click.  Did
the solenoid make any noise aagain when you tighted it up?

Another possiblity, when the solnoid activiated  it
moved/jumped/vibrated enough for the for the solonoid to loose
its ground before the pinion got rammed into the ring gear.  On
single click

Third event.  The connections are corroded/dirty even though they
are tight.  Wiggling or attempting to tighten them broke through
the corrosion/dirt and now the terminals and cables make
contact.  One click when you turned the key to start, and another
when you released it?
