One thing I have not seen mentioned when comparing the two is price.  Tube
shocks are much cheaper and would therefore increase their profit.  Yes the
difference in cost is small for one car, but when you are producing
thousands per year it would add up to a large savings.  Maybe cost is the
reason there was the switch from lever to tube, not performance.
