Same experience here.  IMHO the bearings are very high precision items and
the shims are required to cope with the tolerances in the bearing spacer and
hub (the .003 - which my WS manual says is the minimum shim - difference on
the RHS is probably just a matter of opinion).  So always reassemble with
the original shims first to see what you get.
