Hello,
I finally got the car to start and run long enough to get up to NOT. This
came after several fits and starts of running no more than 5 seconds at a
time. The car idled around 1000 rpm and seemed to be doing ok, but then the
rpms started dropping. Manually engaging the chokle at the carbs seemd to
make things worse, possibly due to incorrect mixture. I would put my foot on
the gas and the car would balk and then the rpms would jump back up.
However, this soon failed and the car quit. A short time later, I got it
running again, but only in 30 second fits and starts. It also blew out some
dark gray smoke. I noticed the fuel seemed to have bubbles in it, so I
elevated the fuel line near the carbs and that helped for awhile, but after
only a couple of minutes, the car died again. I got the bright idea to
change the old fuel filter, and now it won't start at all. I could see the
filter from inside the car with the hood up and fuel was getting squirted
into it, so a faulty fuel pump seems unlikely. The chamber that the fuel
line runs into after the filter seems to be loose from the carb that it
connects to.
Inspection showed the backing plate screw on the distributor to be loose,
and I tightened that before the 5 minute run. Before anything worked, the
very earliest inspection I did turned up a white/black wire with extra
insulation that was supposed to be plugged into the dist. but wasn't. After
I plugged that in, the car finally started running. I apologize for the
almost reverse chronological order of this message.
After following several lister's advice, I found where 3 green/purple wires
had been cut and sealed in the trunk. I assume that two of them can go to a
connector that feeds the lights, but where does the third go? This DPO stuff
is really getting old...
Thanks,
William Killeffer
