A slight error here that bears correcting.  The typical battery may be
rated around 400 amps for cranking current, but the total energy carrying
capacity of a battery is in the range of 40 to 60 amper-hours (less than
one kilowatt-hour).  As such, a 40 amp altermator can fully recharge a
totally flat battery in 60-90 minutes.  In fact an alternator can charge a
flat battery sufficiently to restore it to nearly full operating voltage
and cranking capacity in as little as 5 minutes (assuming the battery is
still in good operating condition).
