My post of yesterday elicited some learned responses yet I am more
mystified than ever.
The problem was a whine or squeel (can someone explain the difference for
future reference?) that occurred after I jumped my B with another battery.
The pitch of the sound clearly increased with engine rpm while not
under load.
This AM I charged the battery for about 3 hours. The engine turned over.
It started right up (at 58 degrees F) and the whine/squeel is gone under
conditions that would have elicited the sound yesterday.
The sound was somewhat beltish but I could be wrong. IF it were, would
that exclude the engine proper? What is left? The alternator (new 2000),
water pump (new 1999), and starting motor (age ????)? I
have most of the smog gear removed from a 76B so there is no air belt. I
presume the starter would disengage after the engine started but if the
battery and solenoid were 'aged', perhaps not.
So in trying to diagnose what might fail in the near future, I am
left in limbo.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
