Well I didn't use chipboard but when I re-did my seats
(3 weeks ago) I added an extra block of dense foam
right up the middle to give a little back support (lumbar)
Spit seats are notoriously unsupportive when the foam
wears down a bit.

I shortened the straps, and added a few rubber bungy cords
to firm up the seat.

The chipboard is bolted to the back of the seat frame and the webbing straps
are stapled to it. As a solution, it's even more stupid than it sounds,
though I can see the logic if you are a reupholsterer trying to make money
by churning jobs out quickly and not thinking about what you are doing.
