Don't have the earthed wire condition continue!
It may fry the gauge sooner or later. Repairing a fried gauge can be $$$.

I think it is the wiring actually. Symptoms with a half tank were empty for
a few days, then it's been totally full every since. I suspected the wire
had come off the sender (empty) and earthed on the chassis (full).
I pulled the wire around at the sender and it seems secure. Anyone know if
it simply unplugs like a spade terminal? It seemed to go into the sender
'hard wired'.
Also noticed that the fuel take off is on the sender which seems rather odd.
Normally it is an outlet pipe in a bottom corner of the tank.
All I can do is check continuity on the wire from the gauge to the sender
and check resistance to the chassis.
I'll let you all know what I find.
