All you can really check on the overdrive is if the solenoid is pushing in
the rod it moves or not.  Usually this is not a problem unless there are
electrical problems (which there obviously have been) - but the OD
electrical system is pretty simple.  When you test it, make sure the trans
is in 4th gear, or the lockout should prevent it from working - then try
shifting out of 4th (preferably to 1 or 2) to see if it turns it off.  Other
than that, it has to turn to determine if it works, and turn under load is
better.
