Flush it anyway to get all the crud out of it. On fresh gas tanks I have 
washed out with detergent let dry then insert a air hose with a fairly high 
volume of air to keep the fumes from even thinking of building up, with a 
nail hole I would clean it up to shiny metal, put a sanded nail in then use a 
soldering copper to solder the hole.
LOTS OF AIR after washing and rewashing out the tank, or take it to a 
professional.
