I have to agree with Max - with one exception (1982 Volvo Turbo - 4/speed
with O/D!) all of my daily driver manual-transmission cars have been front
wheel drive. Jumping out of my '95 Jetta and into the MG - wow, what a
difference! The 'box feels tight and direct, and I can't help but think
'snick' every time I shift... And I know my 'box is not the best around.

As an observer of this thread, I have to say that both the pro-5-speeders
and the pro-O/Ders have made excellent points in defense of their
preferred alternative. I personally would go with the O/D, as I think that
is one of the features that makes our cars different from all others. I
have a fondness for my '82 Dodge Colt with the 4x2 gearbox, mainly 'cause
it was a different way of handling the lack of a 5-speed. Same with the
aforementioned Volvo with O/D. OTOH, having driver 5-speeds for years, I
find it as natural as anything. Now, when they come up with the 6-speed
boxes THAT will certainly be different....!
