The Blower's Manual devotes most of the chapter on gearboxes to the
Wilson preselector. The basic description is a 4 speed planetary
gearbox. The concept is roughly similar to the actual gearbox part of a
contemporary automatic transmission.
A note to add to the towing thread: The manual states that if a
Magnette is to be towed, the driveshaft must be removed as the oil pump
will not operate and the transmission will seize.
