To take advantage of a cam like the Piper 285 that's on Ebay right now, you
need a pretty hot motor in general. The Piper 285 is a long duration, very
high lift cam -- you will need race valve springs to get it to work (coils will
bind on stock springs), and a ported head to get any real advantage. It's not
mild, and it might not be a performance cam without a lot of other mods...

What is a good mild performance cam for the MG? The stock cam.

If you want to improve on the performance, port the head. You'll need an
electric drill, some grinding stones, and a respirator -- less than the price
of your Ebay cam. Check out How to Power Tune MGB Engines (or whatever the
title is) for a sense of how to do it. It's easy, cheap, and it can make an
absolutely huge difference.

The above is an opinion -- and there will be many others. Best of luck.

Matt
