Hello all -

Just roasted my new rear brakes ;-( Had some packages in the car yesterday,
didn't notice that one of the boxes on the front seat had managed to keep
the handbrake lever up just enough that they were dragging. A short 15 mile
ride on the highway later, as I pull off the road to check out that
tell-tale smell, you could hear me cussing a mile away!

Anyway, once you've adjusted the (newly replaced) rear brakes, how much drag
is normal? I adjusted them till spinning the rear wheel met with some
resistance, then backed them off a notch (click?) or so. Seems like this
leaves too much free play in the brake pedal.

Was curious about this, and also how hot the rear wheels would be after a
short drive with light brake use. I played with a few settings on the
adjusters, and find that the setting that gives a good brake pedal feel,
also leaves the rear (rostyle) wheels very warm to the touch after a short
drive. Backing them off a notch makes the wheels notably cooler, but gives a
sloppy pedal feel. Also in this condition, the handbrake will not keep the
car from rolling.

I have been reading everything I could find on the subject, but beyond "text
book" descriptions of how to adjust them, I need the benefit of real world
experience!

So, how much drag is too much?
How far does your pedal travel before applying braking action?

Is there a smarter way to go about this process?
