I just did my first removal with the good advice of the list. It took a hell
of a lot of tapping! I used a socket as a drift. When the cap on the other
end started to protrude, I put a bigger socket under it so the cap could
emerge. I tapped the caps out just far enough to get a set of vice grips on
them. With the vice grips, I rotated the caps back and forth until they
worked loose. This proved much quicker than tapping them the rest of the way
out. Through the whole process, I kept the ujoint soaked in penetrating oil.
I think that really helped.

IMHO: After all that hammering, I wouldn't trust the old ujoints. Just
consider them destroyed. Personally, I would never go through all that
trouble just to paint the drive shaft. But, it sounds like you were going to
replace them anyway. Good luck.
