Good point. I would just say that I would try to use something as close to
the original as possible. While admittedly the original knob-and-cable
system barely worked, it would really be a pain if, say, your newfangled
improvement only lasted six months in actual use. At least the original
style lasted 30-some years (as you noted).

In my case I couldn't see anything wrong with the old ones. I just lubed 'em
and put 'em back in.
