Yep, you got it exactly right, Jim.

That's just the Low Pressure section (runs on the exhaust of the High
Pressure section.)  The whole thing is roughly 40 feet long.  The shaft is
mechanically coupled to a 350 Megawatt generator that's hydrogen
cooled...yep, you fill the whole generator case with pure hydrogen.  As long
as it stays at least 98% pure there's no chance of combustion or explosion,
but if you lose a shaft seal and it starts sucking oxygen into the case it's
time to run!:-)  That's where having a good instrument tech calibrating and
maintaining the hydrogen purity analyzer becomes a life and death
matter....like a lot of other power plant situations.

The whole mess gets torn down, inspected, rebuilt, and reassembled every
three years....and you WISH your engine could receive the balance job this
baby gets every time.
