Hi Dan.

I saw that Frank gave you the answer I was prepared to give you.

I did rings on my 73 B roadster actually a couple of times with the engine
remaining in the chassis with absolutely no issues other than what Frank has
already mentioned about the front pan bolts, and that is not really too big
of an issue. Just takes a little time an patience. Best I can recall, I also
had to loosen the front mounts a little.

To go one step further though, you probably ought to check the bore REAL
carefully and close for wear, out-of-round and taper. That was the reason I
had to do mine twice! The bore checked okay at the top when measured but was
real worn at the bottom. Missed the cylinders being "tapered" and
out-of-round pretty badly and as a result, after just replacing the rings
and honing the cylinders I had remaining issues, namely piston slap.

Doug Blackburn, a "semi-retired" gentleman from a local well known racing
family in these parts in the 50's and 60's, had a "portable" boring bar
setup and actually rebored the cylinders to .60 over for me with the engine
still sitting right in the B. Did a beautiful job! Even furnished me with
the new high compression pistons. VERY reasonable in price too. That was
10-12 years ago though. I don't know if he's still alive much less still in
business. The point is that there are (were???) people who do this.

The only problem with the above for me was that I still had to eventually
remove the engine to fix a "square" crank rod journal and to replace the cam
(and probably other) bearings that caused the low oil pressure that
contributed to the bad crank bearings in the first place.

The whole point is that I could have saved a LOT of aggravation,
duplicate/triplicate work and some money if I had just done it right the
first time. Looking back at it, in hindsight, it wouldn't have been so much
extra work/cost to do it right the first time. A learning experience for me,
the normal hard way, how I usually do everything!

Sure ran great after all that work though!

Still lurking the list.

Ok, did my compression test today, and sure enough, have some bad pistons
rings in #2 - readings were 140 - 60 - 145 - 145.... Of course, this coming
Sunday is my favorite show, the Red Mill show in Clinton, NJ... Looks like I
may be driving my VW there... :-(

I read that I can do this job with the engine in the car; I'd rather not
pull it if I have to. Any hints/tips? Can I source the rings locally or do I
need to ge them from a BritCar specialist? Is there anything else I should
do while the engine is open?

TIA...
