I had this problem when I still had the Stromberg on my '75.

You likely have an exhaust leak at the manifold.  Mine was the junction 
between the manifold and the pipe, you probably have a Cat in that 
spot.  The design of the intake is such that exhaust gases that leak at 
that spot get sucked right back into the air filter.
