Not so. The vacuum switch ensured the OD remained *engaged* if the manual
switch was turned off under conditions of high manifold depression i.e. the
overrun at high rpms and this was to protect the OD. OD remained engaged
until the vacuum dropped i.e. the throttle was opened, clutch dipped, or the
revs dropped closer to idle. It might be possible to simulate a 'kick-down'
by going up to high-revs in overdrive, lifting off, switching off, then
flooring the throttle, but what would be the point? The only precaution the
manual mentions relates to the later LH type which didn't have the vacuum
switch and that is not to disengage OD at high revs if the resultant change
in ratio would push the revs into the red.
