Unfortunatly I haven't got the original "dwell meter" question
anymore. But as far as I know a dwell meter is more or less a
"duty cycle" meter. It measures the duty cycle of the contact
breaker. (For "dwell" the time the points are closed is most
important)

Duty cycle is, in this case, the proportion of time which the
contact breaker is closed in relation to the time it's opened.
For a 4 cyl. engine a single open and close cycle of the contact
breaker corresponds with 90deg. rotation of the distributor shaft.
For my '63 MGB the requirements are 60deg. dwell angle. This
would leave 30deg. for the contact points to be open.

Last week we've measured the "dwell" by using a "digital" scope
meter to display the CB duty cycle. After measuring the time the
points where open and closed I was able to calculate the dwell
angle.

So, if available, you could use a scope meter to calibrate your
dwell meter. (I don't have a dwell meter, therefore we did it
with a scope)

Although I'm a novice, I hope this helps a little.

Best regards,
