No good for inspecting the fuel level when the problem is occurring, then.
Another possibility is to blow in the overflow pipe while looking at the
jet.  If the float chamber is full of fuel and the float valve closed this
*should* result in fuel bubbling up the main jet, visible when the air
cleaners are off.  You could time how long it takes to blow all the fuel out
of the float chambers after the problem and compare it with the time it
takes when it isn't.  Another possibility is to turn off the ignition, give
the float chambers a sharp rap, then turn on the ignition.  If the pump
starts chattering you know the float chamber(s) were empty, either due to a
sticking float valve or possible pump problem.
