Paul,

I just went through this. I replaced a leaking water pump with what appeared 
to be a perfectly good re-built unit. It turned smoothly, the shaft felt 
firm (no sideways movement).

It leaked! Water gushed out! I had to do the job all over again -- second 
time around I used a new pump.
