Well, they are quite bright.  For an instrument lamp, I'm not sure I'd ever
mess with a halogen bulb, but the exterior lamps are quite an improvement.
Note that the bulbs Jeff has are halogen versions of standard lamps, not
LEDs.

LED based lamps work great in interior applications....just be sure you're
either using a resistor with it, or using a LED that has an integral
resistor.

As for brake lights and other applications, keep in mind that a small array
of LEDs will provide light directly outward, which is great for a
flashlight.  But as a replacement taillamp bulb, you'll end up with a very
bright center spot, and not much else, as there won't be any light caught by
the reflector.

Note that on cars that are factory equipped with LED taillamps, they use an
array that fills the entire area of the lens to provide uniform light
