Yes, you can remove the shift lever in place on the car. Check your manual.
It's either a matter of three small screws, or a lock ring -- I forget which
it is on the late tranny.

If you don't mind the short lever you could perhaps tap it with new threads.
Otherwise you will probably have to talk to a dismantler to find a used one.

I had a spare, but it was for the early trans.

Actually, I was thinking of cutting my shift lever down about 1/2 inch.
There are over 1/2 inch of exposed threads showing below the knob, and I
thought it would look better if I could screw the knob down further. It also
would improve the position insofar as "falling readily to hand". But my
guess is that it would be a tough critter to hacksaw.
