The odometer and speedometer are obviously driven primarily by the
spinning speedo cable, but inside the unit, the drive splits off into
separate drives. The speedo is driven by a magnetic coupling, but the
odometers are driven by a "picker" that pulls the odo primary drive gear
one tooth at a time.
When the unit gets old and there is added strain on the odo gears, often
the main odo number ring on the array will start to slip on its shaft.
This usually happens when the array is turning lots of gears at once, as
when the odo passes from 99999 to 100000.
I have successfully fixed a number of these units by disassembling the
array and abrading the main number ring shaft and adding a very small
amount of super-glue to it, then reassembling it. This is a fidgetty
job, since the superglue will bind everything up if it gets out of where
you want it to go, AND the array is easy to fall apart during this
action, spreading the number rings all over the floor. If you like to
fiddle with watches, you can probably do the job.
We have three MGB's at East West Auto Parts here in Tulsa (I'm the
Webmaster). I can ask Ken how much he wants for a speedo unit if you
like, but there's no guarantee it won't fail in the same way, since
these are old cars and have been out in the weather for some years.
