Pipe dope should work. I have done OK with silicone RTV. If it leaks up
around the nuts it could be the gasket surface not sealing, either instead
of or in addition to the threads.

I usually seal waterpump bolts on principle. I can't recall if the manifold
studs are an issue or not in the B engine.
