Some thoughts:  The lead from the starter should be white/light-green and
only carries voltage when cranking, and only it would have been damaged if
it were loose and grounding at the coil end.  White wires carry a full 12v
when the ignition is on, even on a ballasted system there is a white wire
for the 45DE4 electronic ignition system, and if this shorted out it is
likely to cause damage in the wiring around the ignition switch, and
possibly the switch itself.  However it would be nothing to do with why the
brake and ignition lights would still be on with the key out.  Bear in mind
you may have another intermittent problem.
