Hi all,

I purchased a 1980 MGB about a year ago. It needed a new gas tank, which was
replaced. (The previous owner had mounted a small marine type gas container in
the trunk) Also, the engine was running rough, so I replaced the plugs, wires,
cap and rotor, then adjusted the timing. That smoothed out the engine
considerably. All four spark plugs had fairly heavy dry black carbon deposits,
and two of the plugs appeared to be fouled out.

The previous owner had also removed the air pump belt, but otherwise the
emissions system seems to be intact. However, when I reinstalled the air pump
belt, the engine to start backfiring and generally run very poorly. I'm curious
what would cause that. Perhaps a rich fuel mixture?

Also, does anyone know of any MG clubs or contacts in the Detroit area?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
