What's the big deal about just about anything in the collector car hobby?
It's only a big deal if it's a big deal for you. For many of us in
California, having an original "black plate" car means the car was
originally sold and has lived it's whole life in California since the'60s.
It is also an important period correct aspect of the car's appearance.
Having a valid black license plate on a vintage car in California increases
it's market value noticeably. And, like others have said, except for very
narrow exceptions, California doesn't let you register a car with a
replacement older license plate.

Oh, and we think it looks cool.
