Some do run fine without the hookup and yours did as well it seems. The problem 
you are having started suddenly from what you have said. I am guessing 
something like the idea of the dizzy slipping out of place or something like 
that. I still think it is an ignition issue.

Could it be that my distributor hasn't had anything attached all this 
time and would it still run as well as it has?
