The bar at the bottom of the screen is called the 'Task Bar'. At the right
hand end running programs are shown. To the left hand end adjacent to the
'Start' button are quick start buttons. These quick start buttons do only
require one click to start the application but their main advantage is that
they are visible all of the time, unless the task bar is set to auto hide
(in Windows XP only, I believe) Quick launch buttons do not have any speed
advantage over desk top short-cuts. In fact a quick way of adding buttons to
the task bar is to drag a desktop shortcut to the task bar quick launch
area.
 
By the way.. isn't it strange that to close down the computer properly you
need to press the 'Start' button?
