Is the tach flicking about when this happens?  If so check the distributor
ground wire, this ensures continuity of the ignition LT circuit when the
points plate twists due to changing manifold vacuum.  If the tach is steady
is/are the carb damper/s functioning properly?  With SUs you can check by
unscrewing the damper cap, lifting it up, pressing it back down again, and
you should feel the resistance of the damper in the oil before the cap
reaches the top cover.  Could also be problems inside the distributor with
the trigger going intermittent or having shifted its position, substitution
is the only check here, you might like to try going back to points and
condenser and see what happens.
