You will not cause damage to either the coil or ignition by using a 12v coil
(which is what yours now probably is) on a ballasted system, but you *will*
have a weak spark. This could cause difficult starting under adverse
conditions, although being a Sport coil with a slightly more powerful spark
this is mitigated somewhat.
12v standard coils measure about 3 ohms across the primary, 6v coils measure
about 1.5 ohms. A Sport coil I have measures about 2.4 ohms.
Ideally you should have a 6v coil on your system, which together with the
ballast and the ballast bypass system when cranking actually results in a
more powerful spark when cranking than when running. You *could* bypass the
ballast and hence get the full running spark with your 12v coil, but you
would lose the 'boost' effect when starting. I recommend you fit a 6v coil.
