At a tech session on gearboxes and ODs, John Esposito, Quatum
Mechanics, told us that he has several customers who have used ATF
(automatic transmission fluid) in their MGB gearboxes and ODs.
He reported that they said that the gearboxes and ODs worked fine, but
that he (John) had not opened any gearboxes or ODs that had been filled
with ATF, so he was not recommending it at this time. He noted that a
number of manufacturers do specify ATF in their gearboxes.
John warned everyone against the use of synthetic oil in the ODs as
the oil is too slippery for the wet clutch to grip properly. His
recommendation was for straight 30w motor oil.
Mercedes Benz recommended Dexron ATF for the four-speed
fully-syncronised column-shift manual gearboxes of a couple of 1960s M-Bs
I owned. A benefit of ATF is that it does not seem to stiffen in cold
weather and shifting was always easy.
