Best way (that I've tried) to remove UJs involves a vice (or, if you are
in America, a vise), and a couple of sockets.  One socket is just big
enough to receive the cup of the UJ inside it, the other just smaller in
diameter than a cup.  Remove circlips, place one socket either side of
the UJ in the vice, and slowly tighten.  UJ cup should come out no
problem, no hammers, no broken thumbs!  Once you've got two out, you
should be able to wiggle the spider free, and then keep pushing the
remaining two out.

I've heard of UJs that have the grease nipple fitting in the middle of
the cup, rather than the spider, which will be MUCH easier to access.
Only problem is, I can't remember who makes them or where to get them...
