Yet another option is to use a relay to engage the OD coil.
The relay can only be engaged in case (1) the '3rd/4th gear switch' 
on the gearbox is ON and (2) a button is pushed to engage the relay.
This relay remains self-energised until the '3rd/4th gear switch' on 
the box is OFF.
This way, you can never forget to switch off the OD.

This is basically how the OD is wired in one of my other cars, a 1972

(I left out a detail about how to disengage, but that is very easy to 
figure out for yourself, as is the circuit diagram)
