I run my '96 Subaru on LPG.  No noticeable smell at any time, other than a
faint whiff when disconnecting the hose after filling up.  LPG is only
available at a minority of filling stations, but enough that it's not a real
problem (particularly since you can download them to your SatNav for when
you are in an area you are not familiar with).  The cost saving makes me
very happy!
