The more I think about the issue, the more I think split washers with 
displaced ends cannot just "turn into a washer" when compressed as was 
commented on a few emails ago on this topic. The compression of the 
split creates  a force vector perpendicular to the washer, which must 
result in the creation of a lateral static resistance between the nut 
and split washer and between the split washer and whatever is on  its 
other side.

  Am I wrong on this?
