Gary, What i was saying is that i did the switch from auto to standard, then
found out that the 283 has a different size hole for the pilot bushing on
the end of the crank. the 350 crank has the same size hole between the auto
and standards. i ended up using a 350/standard brass bushing and having a
friend machine it down to fit. even the never 3 speed manual didn't fit into
the older bellhousing. Had to have that machine out. the 4 bolt holes lined
up, but not the cover for the input shaft it was about 1/2" bigger in dia.
all of this cause i wanted to use original motor & transmission mounts.

Steve, not sure I understand the question, but, all the GM V-8's have the
same b/house bolt-up pattern, even Big Blocks. If putting a manual where an
auto was, you WILL have to put in the pilot bushing for the end of trans
shaft. It is brass like and taps in easy. Most auto stores should have one.
If you are putting on auto where man was, MUST remove bushing, sometimes
pulls out easy, sometimes need to get behind it with hooked tool and slide
puller to pull it out. Wipe out the hole and put some white grease on torque
convertor center that goes into it as it moves slightly as it's running.
That cover it?

Can anyone tell me if the 265 V8 and the 283 V8 had the same bellhousing. If
so, is there a difference in the bolt holes to hook up an automatic or
standard transmission.

I did a switch on a 66 283 between an auto (powerglide) and a Manual (72 3
speed) and there is a difference on the diameter of the pilot bushing
