Muratic acid, and "restoring aluminum manifolds"

I recall a neat tip about restoring an aluminum manifold that
had been repaired by welding.

The weld was sanded/ground down to match the surface height
of the surrounding metal. Then using one of those "wire rod"
rust removers lightly over the surface to duplicate the
sand casting roughness. This leaves the surface a little
rough, but then applying acid (muratic??) over the area to
smooth out the roughness leaves it looking pretty original.

Has anyone done this? What type of acid, and how long did you
leave it on before rinsing?

Cheers,
