Sincere thanks to the 20 or so people who responded - I read and appreciated every reply ! there isn't enough room to get a nut splitter over the nut, not enough space to use a socket, I already tried the vise grip approach. Next I'm going to try HEAT in the form of a propane torch - fuel tank is out of the car, so if there is a fire it won't be explosive, but i'll keep the fire extinguisher handy.
