I think it just has to do with solidity and ease of building. The box
is butt jointed with screws and glue, and anything less than 3/4" will
require blocking for the screws. Same with the angle iron. If you
build a lighter cabinet you could use the lighter slotted metal for the
legs, nothing wrong with that. Not sure which way I'll go yet.
