Scott, as much as a DIYer as I am, there are some places where it doesn't
pay to "reinvent the wheel." Find a local mobile phone store that carries
the brand phone your SO users and order her the "hands free" mounting kit.

They are about $100 bucks, but come with a mic, speaker, cradle, wiring,
hard mounted handset, and antennae. Most of the ones made for the phone
model are "drop in" cradles, which are very convenient. (not to mention
that they charge the phone when not in use).
They also turn the phone "on and off" with the car. So you can leave the
phone in the cradle all the time.

As for muting the radio, some high end radios have a feature for this
built in. The cradle will have a wire you hook up to the radio that
automatically mutes it when a call comes in. If your radio doesn't have
this feature, it may have a button labeled, "Atn". This will lower the
phone volume with one button push. Then one more push will bring it up to
the proper level.

Again, you can easy spend more that $100 buying pieces of a system that
will not be as nice or work are well as the companies unit will work.

Good luck.

no, it isn't *shop* related, but I'm trying here first because there's
lots of knowledge here and if my s/o kills me while talking on the cell
phone I can't work in the shop.

what I want to do is hard wire her cell phone into the car's wiring system
so that the phone uses the car's speakers for output and a microphone for
input. the mic in I can probably handle, but is there a way to get the
phone to automatically override the radio? as well, any tips on wiring
the phone into the car's wiring. the goal here is complete handsfree and
the antenna as far away from her head as possible. why? 1) her driving
is bad enough without the cell in one hand, 2) she is deaf in one ear, so
the phone makes her 'deaf' to road noise while in use, 3) assuming her
driving doesn't get her killed, I don't want radiation from the antenna to
get her (I know, I know, but this is still the most important person in my
life here and if it *isn't* just a scare, then I want her around), and 4)
she often drives our son in the car and I like him just as much, and I
don't like the idea of them stranded because the phone cord wigged out
again and the phone doesn't work or she got them both killed in an
accident.

an e.e. I'm not, so simple explanations and short words are appreciated.
I can find my way around a pair of wire cutters and a multimeter, though.

thanks

scott
