Everyone I talked to said to put down a cushion/vapor barrier of clear
plastic, smooth on the top, rougher foam surface down.

That sounds like a test for need of vapor barrier.  I was concerned about
how flat and imperfection-free the slab is.   But I doubt that's a problem.

So the only types that will float are the ones that have a positive
interlocking edge?
