My shop has a wall dividing the woodshop from the car section, so I have
2 of the small Hot Dawgs, one for each side. I agree that they're not
quiet, but you can still have a conversation while it's on. I wear
earplugs or muffs most of the time I'm in the shop to protect my ears
from the power tools anyway, so it's not a big deal. The fan blows just
hard enough to circulate the heat, but not so hard that it sends sawdust
flying.

Spend the extra few bucks for a programmable thermostat. If I know I'll
be working in the shop some night after work, I set it to start warming
the place in the evening and I walk into a comfy warm shop when I get
home. It turns itself down every night at 11pm, so I don't have to
remember.

I'm in a mild climate too (Seattle) so I can't tell you how well the Hot
Dawgs would do against a real winter. Bahr's in Kirkland installed them
and they did a great job.

My shop is heated with a Modine Hot Dawg.
