I have quiet a large dust collection myself.
There's dust plus dead bugs on the back of most of the workbenches, some
thick 3-year-old dust in the corners underneath, and in the barn
there's some places with inch-thick dust that was deposited when the
century-old redwood shingle roof (rotted, it was under a 50-year-old
aspalt shingle roof) was torn off last year. We've got a couple
trashcans full of the stuff, and more to sweep up.

I only know about "built in" vacuums, but they're the same idea.
I would vote for the external closet. They make a lot of noise, and
you would it on as long as you're running a machine, so it would
be making noise all that time. Our built-in vacuum makes quite a racket
but its in a closet on the outside of the hallway between the house and
the garage, so it's pretty well muffled unless you're standing next to its
door.
Since the vacuum is essentially low pressure high volume air, the ducts
need to be large and have joints that don't interfere with air flow.
Otherwise you get a serious vacuum drop. I'd go with 4" except maybe for
runs to individual machines if they don't have large flow requirements.
You also need the special large-radius joints. IIRC they are not quite
the same size as standard PVC pipe.
