Don't most mowers have shear pins?
The shear pin in my current mower is a pebble that "seemed
to fit pretty well" after trying the dozen or so I was able
to find at the end of my driveway.
I got the mower because it wouldn't run, but the reason
it didn't run is that the shear pin had sheared. Since the
blade in a mower is also the flywheel, it would run, but
as soon as the grass got thick the blade would spin on
the shaft and the engine would stall out.
The shear pin in my mower was basically a soft half-moon woodruff
key, but from the original impact the slot was very widened.
I always thought I was taking a risk because the pebble
would not shear and I would wreck the crank if I hit something
solid. Evidently, some mowers have this risk factor
built right in from new.
Many summers later, it's still kicking.
