I can attest to the last part.  I had a connection on one of the 
sensors go bad, and the garage door refused to close - I had to 
pull he "emergency" release and close it by hand until I could 
repair the wiring.

If I remember correctly when installing my Sears garage door, 
openers, they absolutely refused to operate if the "safety" 
beams were not connected.
