I've bought a lot of cars (my wife thinks way more than I should have).
I've found that I can always beat the Edmunds TMV price for the car by
a bit. This can take quite a bit of patience with some sales people
though. With something like a new Durango, I would make sure to be
talking to at least two dealerships simultaneously. That helps a lot
(make sure they both know that they are in competition). I also always
negotiate on "Out-the-door" prices. That way they can't hide anything
in document fees and paint protection or any other BS. Just look at
the price Edmunds gives you for TMV and add taxes and license fees.
Then you know where you should end up.
FWIW, I recently had two colleagues ask me to negotiate new car
purchases for them. In both cases they got their car for less than
invoice and all available incentives. One of them got the car for
considerably under invoice.
Also, I won't deal with a sales person that won't give me straight
answers or that I otherwise don't like. There's a dealership in every
town. It's not worth it for how long you have to talk to these guys.
